Morioka Castle was one of Tohoku’s great fortresses. Only the stone walls remain, but they are spectacular — rising over the Nakatsu River with Iwate-san volcano framed behind. The surrounding Iwate Park (Morioka Castle Ruins Park) is the city’s finest cherry blossom spot, with over 300 trees.
