Shodoshima, the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, is Japan’s home of the olive. Its warm, dry, sunny climate proved ideal when olive cultivation was first successfully established here in the early twentieth century, and the island has embraced the crop ever since. Silvery olive groves cover the hillsides, and the Olive Park — with its Greek-style windmill, gardens and sea views — has a distinctly Mediterranean feel that draws visitors for photos and strolls. The island produces olive oil, olive-based cosmetics, olive leaf tea, pickled olives and much more, sold at shops and the park.
