Yashima is a striking flat-topped lava plateau that rises steeply above the coast just east of Takamatsu, its level summit and sheer sides making it a local landmark. From the top, terraces and viewpoints command sweeping panoramas over Takamatsu, the island-dotted Seto Inland Sea, and the surrounding coast — especially beautiful at sunset. The plateau is steeped in history: it was the site of the Battle of Yashima in 1185, a famous clash of the Genpei War between the Minamoto and Taira clans, remembered in legend and place names. Yashima-ji, one of the temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage, sits atop the plateau among the trees. Reached by road or a walking trail, Yashima combines easy nature, history and some of the best views around Takamatsu.
