Kagoshima’s warm southern location means it is one of the earliest places on mainland Japan to see cherry blossoms (sakura) each spring, with trees often in full bloom from around late March. When the blossoms arrive, the city and surrounding areas host a much-loved hanami (blossom-viewing) season and festivals. Cherry trees bloom at numerous spots across the prefecture: in city parks and along riversides, around the ruins of Tsurumaru Castle, in the beautiful garden of Sengan-en (where the pink blossoms frame views of the smoking Sakurajima volcano across the bay), and at scenic viewpoints and mountain areas. Locals gather beneath the trees for picnics and celebrations, and some spots hold evening illuminations lighting up the blossoms after dark. Warm, early-blooming and beautifully framed by the volcano and sea, cherry-blossom season is a lovely time to visit Kagoshima — check the bloom forecast, as the peak lasts only about a week.
