Ibusuki, a hot-spring resort town on the coast at the southern end of the Satsuma Peninsula, is famous throughout Japan for its signature natural sand baths (sunamushi onsen). Along the beach here, hot springs heat the volcanic sand from below, and — in a rare and wonderful experience found in few places — visitors don a light yukata, lie down on the shore, and are buried up to the neck in the warm, heavy sand by attendants. As you lie cocooned, the deep, even heat and gentle weight induce a profound, sweaty relaxation said to boost circulation and detoxify, all while listening to the waves. After the sand bath, you rinse off and finish with a normal hot-spring bath. Beyond the sand baths, Ibusuki is a relaxed subtropical resort with palm-lined streets, ryokan, coastal scenery, the conical ‘Satsuma Fuji’ (Mount Kaimon) nearby and the scenic Lake Ikeda. A soothing and utterly distinctive southern-Kagoshima escape.

Tips
Do the signature sand bath: wear the provided yukata, lie down and let the attendants bury you, relaxing for the ten to fifteen minutes as the heat works, then rinse and take a normal onsen bath. Stay hydrated as it makes you sweat, book an overnight ryokan stay to enjoy the resort, and combine it with Chiran and Mount Kaimon.
