The Kirishima area, straddling the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki, is a dramatic volcanic landscape of peaks, craters and crater lakes protected within Japan’s first national park, and a wonderful mountain and onsen destination. Tips
Check volcanic activity and trail closures before hiking, as this is an active range. Combine a hike or the crater lakes with the grand Kirishima Jingū shrine and a soak in the sulphur hot springs, come in late spring for the mountain azaleas or autumn for colour, and stay overnight at an onsen ryokan.
