The Sakurajima Nagisa Lava Footbath (Nagisa Yumeguri Onsen) is a delightful and completely free attraction on the shore of Sakurajima island, and a lovely way to relax while taking in the volcano. Stretching about 100 metres along the coast, it is one of the longest footbaths in Japan. Set among the black solidified lava rocks of the shoreline, the footbath is fed by natural hot-spring water heated by the volcano’s geothermal energy, and as you sit and soak your tired feet in the warm water, you enjoy open views across Kinko Bay back toward Kagoshima city, with the great cone of Sakurajima rising behind you. It’s a perfect, relaxing stop on a Sakurajima visit — free, scenic and uniquely volcanic. Just bring a small towel to dry your feet, and combine it with the island’s lava fields, viewpoints and ferry back to the city.
