As dusk falls, the garden’s ponds, streams, trees, stone lanterns and elegant buildings are lit up with warm lights and colourful displays, their reflections shimmering in the still water. The historic Shimazu residence and the grounds take on a romantic, dreamlike glow, and seasonal decorations and light installations add to the festive winter atmosphere. Combined with the garden’s usual grandeur — and, by day, its famous ‘borrowed scenery’ view of Sakurajima volcano — the winter illumination offers a special way to experience Sengan-en after dark.
