Tanegashima, a long, flat subtropical island south of Kagoshima, is home to the Tanegashima Space Center, Japan’s largest rocket launch complex and often called one of the most beautiful launch sites in the world for its stunning coastal setting. Operated by JAXA, the Japanese space agency, it launches large rockets carrying satellites and cargo into space. Visitors can tour the vast grounds — set among white-sand beaches, blue seas and green headlands — and explore the free Space Science and Technology Museum, with displays on rockets, satellites, space exploration and a real rocket and equipment on show, plus guided tours of the launch facilities (by reservation).
