Hakone is one of Japan’s premier hot-spring (onsen) resorts — a volcanic region where dozens of springs feed historic inns, luxury ryokan and casual day baths, all just over an hour from Tokyo. Soaking in an open-air rotenburo with mountain or valley views, then dining on a multi-course kaiseki dinner in a riverside ryokan, is the quintessential Hakone experience. With more than a dozen distinct onsen towns, mineral waters of every type, and options from budget day-trips to splurge stays, Hakone is the easiest place near the capital to discover Japan’s bathing culture.

This guide covers the onsen areas, day baths, ryokan, etiquette and access.

The onsen areas

  • Hakone-Yumoto: the gateway town, easiest for day baths and shopping.
  • Tonosawa, Miyanoshita, Gora, Sengokuhara: quieter, scenic areas with historic and luxury inns.
  • Ubako & Owakudani: higher-up springs near the ropeway with milky, sulphurous waters.

Day baths vs. ryokan

  • Day-use (higaeri) baths let you soak without staying — perfect on a Hakone loop day trip.
  • An overnight ryokan with private or open-air baths and kaiseki dinner is the full experience — book ahead, especially weekends and autumn.

Etiquette & tips

  • Wash and rinse fully before entering the bath; no swimwear; tie up long hair.
  • Tattoos may be restricted at some baths — check ahead or choose a private bath.
  • Many ryokan offer private (kashikiri) baths for couples and families.

Combine your visit

Pair your soak with the rest of Hakone:

How to get there

  • Odakyu “Romancecar” to Hakone-Yumoto (~85 min from Shinjuku), then local transport to your onsen.
