Each autumn, Yokohama’s historic Red Brick Warehouse (Akarenga) on the waterfront transforms into a slice of Bavaria for the city’s hugely popular Oktoberfest — one of Japan’s largest German beer festivals. Beneath the brick facades and harbour lights, long communal tables fill with revellers raising steins of imported German beer, tucking into sausages, pretzels and roast pork while oompah bands play. With its lively atmosphere, bay-side setting and dozens of beers to sample, Yokohama Oktoberfest is a fun, festive evening out — and the same waterfront hosts spring and other seasonal beer events too.
This guide covers the festival, the beer and food, tips and access.
