The Niyodogawa is one of Japan’s clearest rivers, celebrated for a colour so vivid it has its own name: ‘Niyodo Blue’, a luminous turquoise that glows in the sunlight where the water runs deep and pure over pale stones. Flowing from the mountains of central Kochi, it is dotted with jewel-like spots — the pool beneath Nakatsu Gorge, the astonishing clarity of Niko-buchi pool, waterfalls and swimming holes framed by forested slopes. In the warm months it is a wonderful place to swim, paddle and cool off in some of the most beautiful river water in the country, while its scenery and light make it a favourite of photographers. It is nature at its most refreshing.

Tips

Come on a sunny day in summer when the light brings out the famous Niyodo Blue and the water is warm enough to swim, and drive between the scattered pools and gorges as they are spread along the valley. Take great care with currents and depth when swimming in natural water, wear water shoes for slippery rocks, and go early for the calmest, clearest conditions.
