Ryugado is counted among Japan’s three great limestone caves, a spectacular cavern carved over a million and a half years into the hills of eastern Kochi. A well-lit walking route of around a kilometre leads through soaring chambers past a wealth of formations — stalactites, flowstone curtains, an underground waterfall and pools — with the added fascination of ancient traces showing that people lived at the cave mouth some two thousand years ago. For the more adventurous, a separate ‘adventure course’ lets you explore rougher, unlit passages with a helmet and light, clambering and squeezing through the cave much as early explorers did. Cool year-round, it is a highlight of inland Kochi.

Tips
Choose between the easy lit walking route and the adventure course when you book, as the adventure option needs booking, old clothes and a willingness to get muddy. Wear shoes with grip for the damp path, bring a light layer as the cave stays cool, and note the steady climb through the standard route as you ascend through the chambers.
