Yosakoi is Kochi’s gift to Japan: a dynamic, modern dance festival born here in 1954 that has since spread across the whole country and beyond. Held every August, the Kochi Yosakoi Festival transforms the city into a stage as around two hundred teams — tens of thousands of dancers in dazzling matching costumes — parade and dance through the streets to pounding music that blends traditional and modern sounds. Each dancer wields naruko, small wooden clappers that click in rhythm, and every team choreographs its own energetic routine, competing for prizes across multiple venues. Loud, colourful and utterly exhilarating, it is one of the great festivals of western Japan and the beating heart of Kochi’s summer.
