The Aso caldera, in the heart of Aso-Kujū National Park, is one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world — a vast basin some 25 km across, ringed by mountains, holding a green landscape of towns, rice fields and grasslands within its walls. Touring it by car is one of the great scenic drives of Kyushu. The classic viewpoint is Daikanbō, a lookout on the caldera’s northern rim offering a jaw-dropping panorama over the entire basin, the central volcanic peaks and the outer rim — from here the row of central cones is said to resemble a ‘sleeping Buddha’ reclining on the plain. The drive also takes in rolling grasslands where cattle and horses graze, panoramic ridge roads such as the Milk Road, grassy hills like Kusasenri, and endless photo stops. Come on a clear day (early morning offers a chance of a magical ‘sea of clouds’ filling the caldera) for one of Kumamoto’s most unforgettable landscapes.

Tips
Do this as a self-drive, as the caldera-rim roads and viewpoints are spread out and hard to reach otherwise, and head to Daikanbō for the classic panorama. Come on a clear day for the best views, try an early-morning start in autumn for a chance of the magical ‘sea of clouds’, and allow plenty of time for photo stops along the grassland roads.
