The Hi no Kuni Matsuri (‘Fire Country Festival’) is Kumamoto city’s biggest and liveliest summer celebration, held over several days in August. Its name reflects Kumamoto’s identity as the ‘Land of Fire’, tied to the great Aso volcano. The festival’s centrepiece is the huge ‘Otemoyan Sōodori’ — a mass street dance in which thousands of participants in colourful costumes, organised into teams, dance energetically through the downtown streets to the catchy strains of ‘Otemoyan’, a famous and much-loved Kumamoto folk song. The rhythmic music, matching outfits and joyful movement create an infectious, high-spirited atmosphere, and the celebration also includes a summer fireworks display over the river, food stalls and other events. Vibrant, communal and full of local pride, the Hi no Kuni Matsuri is a great time to experience Kumamoto’s summer energy alongside the locals.
