Kumamoto Castle is one of the finest places in Kyushu to enjoy cherry blossoms (sakura), and each spring the grounds host a much-loved hanami (blossom-viewing) season and festival. Around the castle’s imposing black keep and along its stone walls and moats bloom several hundred cherry trees of various types, framing the fortress in clouds of soft pink and white — a spectacular contrast between the delicate blossoms and the mighty castle architecture. During the peak, usually late March to early April, visitors stroll the grounds, picnic beneath the trees, and enjoy the festive atmosphere, while evening illuminations light up both the blossoms and the castle for romantic night-time viewing.
