The Miyako Odori, the ‘Dances of the Old Capital’, is the great annual public performance of the geiko and maiko of Gion Kobu, held throughout April since 1872. For a few weeks each spring, the geisha who normally perform only in private teahouses take to a theatre stage in a lavish, tightly choreographed production, with rows of maiko in matching seasonal kimono dancing to live traditional music, backed by painted scenery that changes with the seasons of the year. It is one of the very few opportunities for ordinary visitors to see Kyoto’s geisha perform, and can be paired with a tea ceremony served by a maiko before the show.

Tips
It runs only in April, so book tickets online well ahead, especially for cherry-blossom season when Kyoto is busiest. Pay a little more for the tea-ceremony option before the show if you want a maiko-served bowl of matcha, arrive early to find your seat, and note that photography is not allowed during the performance — put the camera away and simply watch.
