The Kyoto Railway Museum, opened in 2016 just west of Kyoto Station, is one of the best railway museums in Japan and a superb outing for families and enthusiasts alike. It displays 53 real trains spanning the whole history of Japanese rail, from black steam locomotives through classic express carriages to an early shinkansen bullet train, many of which you can board. A highlight is the preserved roundhouse and turntable, where working steam locomotives are still kept, and you can ride a genuine steam train on a short line. Interactive exhibits, a driving simulator and a rooftop deck overlooking the real tracks round out the day.

Tips
Allow a good half-day, as there is far more here than a quick look suggests, and check the schedule for the steam-train rides and roundhouse demonstrations, which are the highlights and run at set times. It’s an excellent rainy-day option, pairs naturally with the Kyoto Aquarium in the same Umekoji Park, and the rooftop deck is a fine free spot to watch real bullet trains pass.
