The Sagano Romantic Train, known affectionately as the Torokko, is a nostalgic open-window sightseeing train that trundles along the cliffs of the Hozu River gorge between Arashiyama and Kameoka. For 25 slow, scenic minutes it follows the river through forested mountains that explode with colour in autumn, froth with cherry blossom in spring, and glow deep green in summer — a beloved Kyoto experience that pairs perfectly with a traditional boat ride back down the same gorge.

What Is the Torokko?

The Sagano Scenic Railway runs along a former section of the San-in main line that was bypassed when the modern railway was straightened — leaving this gorgeous old riverside route to become a dedicated sightseeing line. The retro Torokko trains have large open windows (and one partially open-air car), wooden-bench seating, and trundle slowly so passengers can drink in the gorge views. Conductors point out highlights, and the whole experience has a charming, old-fashioned festivity.

The line runs Torokko Saga → Torokko Arashiyama → Torokko Hozukyo → Torokko Kameoka, about 7 km in 25 minutes.

How to Book (Important)

The Torokko is hugely popular and reserved seats sell out, especially during the autumn foliage season (November) and on weekends and holidays.

  • Book in advance — tickets can be reserved up to a month ahead through JR ticket offices, online resellers (Klook, etc.), or at the station if seats remain.
  • Autumn: Treat advance booking as essential; same-day tickets in November are very hard to get.
  • A limited number of same-day standing/open-car tickets (Car 5, “The Rich”) may be sold on the day — fun in good weather, but not guaranteed.

Which Seats to Choose

  • River side: The best gorge and river views are on the right-hand side travelling from Saga toward Kameoka (i.e., facing the direction of travel, the river is on your right for much of the scenic stretch). When booking, ask for the river-facing side.
  • Car 5 (open-air “Rich” car): No windows at all — the most immersive views and breeze, best in fine weather, sold same-day only.
  • Don’t agonise too much: the train is slow and the gorge is on both sides at various points; any seat is scenic.

The Classic Train + Boat Loop

The signature Arashiyama day combines the train one way and the Hozugawa River boat ride (Hozugawa Kudari) the other:

  1. Take the Torokko from Torokko Saga (Arashiyama) up to Torokko Kameoka.
  2. From near Kameoka, transfer (a short bus/walk) to the Hozu River boat departure point.
  3. Ride the boat ~2 hours back down the gorge through rapids and calm pools to Arashiyama, poled and steered by traditional boatmen.

This gives you the gorge from both the cliffs (train) and the water (boat) — a brilliant, varied half-day. You can also simply ride the Torokko round-trip if short on time.

Best Season

  • Autumn (mid–late November): The headline season — the gorge ablaze with maple. Book well ahead.
  • Spring (early April): Cherry blossoms along the river and mountains.
  • Summer: Lush green and cooler river air.
  • Winter: The Torokko generally does not run in winter (roughly late December to February) — check operating dates before planning.

  • Torokko Saga Station is right beside JR Saga-Arashiyama Station (15 min from Kyoto Station on the JR Sagano Line).
