Akafuku is the definitive sweet of Ise, made and served on the pilgrim road to Ise Jingu since 1707. Each piece is a pillow of soft mochi topped with a generous wave of smooth sweet red-bean paste, its three ridges said to represent the flow of the clear Isuzu River that runs beside the shrine. The historic main shop stands on Oharaimachi at the Naiku gate, its tatami tearoom opening onto the river, where a plate of two freshly made akafuku with a cup of roasted green tea is one of the simple, perfect pleasures of an Ise visit. Boxes make the classic Ise souvenir.

Tips
Eat it fresh at the main shop rather than only buying a box — freshly made akafuku, soft and barely sweet, tastes noticeably better than the boxed version, and the riverside tearoom is a lovely rest after the shrine. The shop opens at dawn with the shrine, so an early akafuku with tea makes a perfect start; grab a box for the road as it’s the quintessential Ise gift.
