Perched on the wooded Aoba Hill above Sendai, the ruins of Aoba Castle — built by the one-eyed warlord Date Masamune in 1600 — command sweeping views over the city grid Masamune himself designed. A dramatic bronze equestrian statue of Masamune in full armour stands at the ruined honmaru, his crescent-moon helmet unmistakable against the sky. Each June, the Date Masamune Festival recreates his triumphant entry into Sendai with a horseback procession in full 17th-century armour.
