Sendai Tanabata is Japan’s largest and most spectacular Star Festival, held each August (rather than the traditional July date) since a decision to preserve harvest-season timing centuries ago. Thousands of enormous, hand-crafted paper streamers — some reaching several metres long — hang from bamboo poles along the city’s covered shopping arcades, each one taking families and shopkeepers weeks to make, transforming central Sendai into a rustling forest of colour for three days.

Tips
The arcades get very crowded during peak hours — visit early morning or evening for a more relaxed experience. Look closely at each streamer’s paper ornaments, which follow traditional symbolic designs.
