Aoshima is a small, subtropical island just off the coast of Miyazaki city, connected to the mainland by a footbridge and famous for its natural beauty and romantic shrine. The little island is entirely covered in a lush jungle of some 5,000 betel palms and subtropical plants, giving it an exotic, southern-island feel. Ringing the island is one of its most striking features: the ‘Oni no Sentakuita’ or ‘Devil’s Washboard’, vast wave-cut platforms of ridged rock that radiate out into the sea in remarkable regular corrugations, exposed at low tide. At the island’s heart sits Aoshima Shrine, a vibrant vermilion shrine dedicated to deities of marriage, love and safe childbirth, popular with couples. Small but charming, easy to reach and beautifully scenic, Aoshima makes a delightful half-day trip near Miyazaki city.
