Miyazaki’s coastline offers superb scenic driving not only south along the Nichinan Coast but also north around the Hyuga area, where the dramatic ‘Himuka’ coast features some of the prefecture’s most striking sea scenery. The star attraction is Cape Umagase (Umagase), where sheer cliffs of columnar volcanic rock — formed by ancient lava flows and eroded into remarkable regular pillars — drop dramatically into the deep blue sea, viewed from clifftop walkways and lookouts. Nearby is the famous ‘Kanattaba’ or heart-shaped rock inlet at the Cruise Terrace, a hugely popular photo spot said to bring luck in love. The area also has sea caves, coves, lighthouses and coastal viewpoints. Combined with the town of Hyuga and its hyuga-natsu citrus, a scenic drive along the northern coast reveals a wilder, rockier and less-visited side of Miyazaki’s beautiful shoreline.
