The Kirishima Mountains, a cluster of volcanic peaks straddling the border between Miyazaki and Kagoshima, form one of Kyushu’s most dramatic and spiritually significant landscapes, protected within Japan’s first national park. This still-active volcanic range features more than twenty craters, several vivid blue-green crater lakes, steaming vents and rugged peaks including Karakuni-dake (the highest) and the perfectly conical Mount Takachiho-no-mine. The mountains are laced with hiking trails offering superb views over craters, lakes and, on clear days, all the way to the sea and the volcano of Sakurajima. Kirishima is also deeply sacred: in Japanese mythology, the peak of Takachiho-no-mine is where the grandson of the sun goddess is said to have descended to earth, and the ancient Kirishima Jingū shrine sits on the wooded slopes. With volcanic scenery, hiking and hot springs nearby, Kirishima is a highlight of southern Kyushu — though check volcanic activity before hiking.

Tips
