The Nichinan Coast (Nichinan Kaigan) is a beautiful stretch of subtropical coastline running south from Miyazaki city, and one of the most scenic drives in Kyushu. Following the shore along Route 220, the road winds past a succession of dramatic capes, blue Pacific bays, rocky islets, phoenix palm-lined avenues and lush green hills, with viewpoints and rest stops along the way. It links some of Miyazaki’s most famous sights, including the cave shrine of Udo Jingū set in the seaside cliffs, and further south, Cape Toi with its herds of wild horses grazing on the headland. The warm climate, southern vegetation and sparkling sea give the whole coast a relaxed, resort-like feel. Whether by car, bus or bicycle, travelling the Nichinan Coast — ideally combined with Aoshima and Udo Shrine — is one of the great pleasures of a Miyazaki trip.

Drive the coast at a relaxed pace with stops at the capes, viewpoints and palm-lined avenues, ideally on a fine, clear day. Combine it with Aoshima at the northern end and Udo Shrine along the way, continue south to Cape Toi for the wild horses if you have time, and enjoy the subtropical, resort-like atmosphere.
