Takachiho Gorge, in the mountains of northern Miyazaki, is one of Japan’s most stunning natural landscapes. Formed when ancient lava from Mount Aso cooled and was carved by the Gokase River, the narrow gorge is walled by dramatic columns of grey volcanic basalt, rising up to 100 metres in beautifully symmetrical, folded formations. Down the middle flows the emerald-green river, and the slender Manai Falls tumbles some 17 metres directly into the gorge — the iconic view. The most magical way to experience it is by renting a rowboat and paddling along the base of the cliffs right up to the waterfall’s spray, though a walking path along the rim gives lovely views too. Steeped in Japanese creation mythology as the legendary home of the gods, Takachiho is a deeply atmospheric, sacred and beautiful place — one of Miyazaki’s absolute highlights.

Tips
Rent a rowboat to paddle right up to the waterfall for the classic experience, but book ahead or arrive early as boats sell out and can pause in high water. Walk the clifftop path too for the views, come in fresh green or autumn colour, and combine it with Takachiho’s shrines and night kagura for the full mythological experience.
