The most famous is linked to the legend of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, who — angered by her brother — hid herself in a heavenly rock cave (Ama-no-Iwato), plunging the world into darkness until the other gods gathered to lure her out. Near the shrine that venerates this legend lies Ama-no-Yasugawara, an atmospheric cave in a quiet riverside gorge where the myriad gods are said to have gathered to discuss how to coax her out. Today the cave and its approach are filled with thousands of small towers of stacked stones left by visitors making wishes, creating a deeply mystical, hushed atmosphere.
