Takachiho yokagura is an ancient sacred dance (kagura) dedicated to the gods, and one of the most captivating cultural experiences in Miyazaki. Rooted in the town’s deep connection to Japanese creation mythology, the dances retell the famous legend of the sun goddess Amaterasu, who hid in a cave and plunged the world into darkness until the other gods lured her out with music and dance. In the traditional season (mid-November to early February), villages across Takachiho perform the full ritual — all 33 dances over an entire night, in farmhouses warmed by fires, a profound community tradition recognised by UNESCO. For visitors year-round, a representative selection of the most famous and entertaining dances is performed every evening at Takachiho Shrine. Masked dancers, hypnotic drumming and firelight make it a mesmerising, atmospheric window into Japan’s mythological soul.
