Nagano Prefecture — Japan’s most mountainous — hosts the Japan Alps, the 1998 Winter Olympics legacy infrastructure, some of Japan’s most famous onsen towns, and the world’s most photographed wildlife scene: wild macaque monkeys bathing in a hot spring at Jigokudani. The prefecture spans from the elegant castle town of Matsumoto to the ski mecca of Hakuba and the literary resort of Karuizawa.
Best Areas to Stay

Practical Tips
- Snow monkey winter timing: January to March is optimal — macaques are most reliably in the hot spring when air temperatures are coldest. Arrive by 9 a.m. before the tour groups. The path from the park entrance is 1.6 km on an unpaved forest track.
- Shibu Onsen 9-bath circuit: Each of the 9 communal baths (soto-yu) has a different spring composition. Completing all 9 in a single stay is a traditional custom — guests collect stamps at each bath.
- Hakuba skiing: February is typically the best powder month. The Hakuba Valley 1-day lift pass covers all 7 resorts (¥6,500). Spring skiing (March–April) offers softer snow and longer daylight. Summer hiking on the same mountains is excellent.
- Matsumoto Castle early entry: The castle tower interior is steep and narrow — arrive at 8:30 a.m. when it opens to avoid queuing. The exterior from the moat path is always accessible and especially beautiful at dawn.
