Kamikochi is a protected high-altitude valley in the Northern Japan Alps, roughly 1,500 metres above sea level, renowned for its pristine scenery: the clear Azusa River winding beneath towering peaks, the iconic Kappa Bridge, marshes and ponds, and forests carpeted with alpine wildflowers in summer. Private cars are banned to protect the fragile environment, so access is by bus or taxi only, and the valley offers everything from easy flat riverside walks and flower-viewing trails to serious mountaineering routes into the surrounding Alps, all within a genuinely spectacular natural setting.

Getting There
- By bus: private cars are banned; take a bus from Matsumoto or the Sawando/Hirayu park-and-ride points.
- By car + shuttle: park at Sawando and transfer to the shuttle bus.
Tips
Kamikochi is closed to visitors in winter and only open roughly mid-April to mid-November, so plan your trip within the season. Even in summer the valley is cool at altitude and weather can change quickly, so bring a layer, and note that a flat riverside walk suits casual visitors while the surrounding peaks require serious mountaineering experience and preparation.
