The Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium, on the coast east of the city, is a delightful, family-friendly attraction that keeps one of the largest varieties of penguin species of any aquarium in the world — around nine kinds, from tiny to king penguins. Visitors can watch the penguins swim gracefully in a large deep tank, waddle on land, and enjoy daily feeding times and shows. A big draw is the range of close-up experiences: on some days you can see penguins take a ‘walk’ outside, watch feeding up close, or join hands-on programmes, and there’s a natural beach where penguins swim in the open sea. Beyond penguins the aquarium has other marine life, touch pools and a pleasant seaside setting. Fun, educational and especially great for children, it’s a charming, lighter addition to a Nagasaki itinerary.
