The Heijo Palace Site is the vast, open remains of the imperial palace of Nara’s 8th-century capital, Heijo-kyo, now a UNESCO World Heritage park. Sweeping lawns are dotted with the grandly reconstructed Suzaku Gate and Daigokuden hall, plus free museums — a spacious, uncrowded counterpoint to the temples.
