Twice a year, all 3,000 bronze and stone lanterns of Kasuga Taisha are lit at once for the Mantoro festival, filling the shrine and its forest approach with a magical golden glow. Held in early February (Setsubun) and mid-August (Chugen), it’s one of Nara’s most atmospheric evenings.
