Mount Ikoma, rising on the border between Nara and Osaka, is a fun and nostalgic mountain escape easily reached from either city. It’s climbed by the Ikoma Cable Car, the oldest cable railway in Japan (opened 1918), whose famously quirky cars are shaped like a cat (Mike) and a dog (Bull) — a hit with children. At the top sit the charmingly retro Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park, one of Japan’s oldest, and the atmospheric Hozanji temple on the slope below. The great draw, though, is the view: the summit looks out over the entire Osaka plain, a glittering carpet of lights after dark and one of the Kansai region’s finest night panoramas.

Tips
Kids love the cat- and dog-shaped cable cars, making Ikoma a great family half-day, but the real payoff is the night view — time your visit so you’re at the summit as the Osaka plain lights up after dark, one of the Kansai’s best free-ish panoramas. Check the retro amusement park’s seasonal hours before going, and stop at Hozanji temple partway up the cable-car line.
