Naramachi is Nara’s atmospheric old merchant quarter, a lattice-fronted maze of Edo- and Meiji-era townhouses (machiya) now filled with craft shops, cafes, small museums and temples. Free to wander, it’s the city’s best area for slow strolling away from the deer crowds.
