Soni Kogen (Soni Highland), on a mountain plateau in far-eastern Nara near Uda, is one of Japan’s most beautiful grassland landscapes, especially in autumn. Across some 38 hectares of gently sloping upland, vast fields of susuki (Japanese pampas grass) grow head-high and, from late September through November, ripen to a silvery gold that shimmers and ripples in waves under the wind and low autumn sun. Well-made trails climb through the grass to viewpoints over the plateau and surrounding peaks, and at dusk the backlit silver plumes are unforgettable — a favourite of photographers and one of Nara’s great natural spectacles.

Tips

Come between late September and November for the susuki at its silvery best, and time your visit for late afternoon into dusk, when the low sun backlights the plumes into glowing silver — the reason photographers make the trip. It’s remote in eastern Nara, so a car helps; wear layers, as the highland is cooler and windier than the valleys below.
