Mount Wakakusa is a gentle grass-covered hill rising above Nara Park, offering some of the city’s best panoramas and roaming deer on its slopes. Each January its dry grass is dramatically set ablaze in the Wakakusa Yamayaki festival, capped by fireworks.

Climbing the Hill
- A short, steep grass climb to sweeping views over Nara’s temples and basin.
- Deer graze the slopes; sunset views back over the city are superb.
- The hill closes in winter (roughly mid-Dec to mid-March).
The Yamayaki Festival
- Held on the fourth Saturday of January, when the entire hillside is set on fire at dusk.
- Preceded by fireworks — viewable from Nara Park and the city below.
- Arrive early for a good vantage; dress very warmly.

Getting There
- From Kintetsu Nara Station: 20–25 min walk east to the base gate.
- By bus: to Todaiji Daibutsuden/Kasuga area, then a short walk.
Tips
For Yamayaki, the fireworks and blaze are best seen from an open spot in Nara Park — go early and bundle up.
