Mount Yoshino (Yoshinoyama) is Japan’s most famous cherry-blossom destination, with some 30,000 trees blanketing the mountainside in four zones that bloom in succession. A UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, it turns pink for roughly two weeks each April and is unforgettable at dawn.

The Four Blossom Zones

  • Shimo Senbon (lower) — first to bloom, near the ropeway and Kimpusen-ji temple.
  • Naka Senbon (middle) — the classic viewpoints and crowds.
  • Kami Senbon (upper) & Oku Senbon (inner) — later blooms, quieter, best panoramas.
  • Bloom moves uphill over ~1–2 weeks, so timing depends on elevation.

Tips for Blossom Season

  • Go at dawn or on a weekday — daytime weekends are extremely crowded.
  • Check bloom forecasts; the four zones peak on slightly different dates.
  • Great in autumn too, with maples and fewer people.
