Nakatsu Castle, in the coastal town of Nakatsu in northern Oita, is a handsome reconstructed castle counted among Japan’s notable ‘water castles’, built where the river meets the sea. It was founded in the late sixteenth century by Kuroda Kanbei (Yoshitaka), one of the most brilliant strategists of Japan’s warring-states era, and later held by the Okudaira clan. The elegant black keep, rebuilt in the twentieth century, houses a museum of samurai armour, weapons and local history, and its stone walls — among the oldest surviving parts — are admired by castle enthusiasts. Nakatsu is also the hometown of Fukuzawa Yukichi, the great Meiji-era thinker, educator and founder of Keio University whose portrait long featured on the ¥10,000 note; his former residence is preserved in the town. With its castle, samurai streets and cultural heritage, Nakatsu makes a rewarding stop in northern Oita.
