Bitchu Matsuyama is unique: of Japan’s twelve surviving original castle keeps, it is the only one still standing on a mountain top, at 430 metres above the town of Takahashi. Built and rebuilt from the 13th century onwards, the present keep dates from 1683 and has never been reconstructed — you climb to a genuinely old wooden building, small and weathered, set among massive stone ramparts and rock outcrops that follow the ridge. On still autumn mornings the valley below fills with mist and the castle appears to float above a sea of cloud, a sight seen from a viewpoint on the opposite hillside.

Getting There
- By train + bus/taxi: JR to Bitchu-Takahashi, then a shuttle partway up.
- On foot: a steep 20–30 minute climb from the upper car park.
Tips
Wear proper shoes — even with the shuttle bus there is a steep 20–30 minute climb on an uneven path to the keep. To see the famous sea of clouds you must be at the Unkai viewing platform on the opposite mountain before dawn, not at the castle itself, and it needs a cold, clear, windless autumn morning, so treat a sighting as luck.
