Because Okayama is Japan’s Fruit Kingdom, picking your own is one of the most enjoyable things to do here in season. Orchards in Akaiwa and the surrounding hills open from early summer for white peaches and from late summer into autumn for Muscat of Alexandria and Shine Muscat grapes. The usual format is a fixed-price session in the greenhouse or orchard, with an all-you-can-eat window of around 30 to 60 minutes, and the option to buy additional fruit to take away. Staff show you how to judge ripeness — an important skill with peaches, which do not ripen further once picked.

Tips
Book ahead and check exactly which fruit is in season on your dates, as the windows are short and precise — turning up in June or November means no picking at all. A car makes this far easier since orchards are scattered, and note that all-you-can-eat usually means eating on site only, with anything taken away charged separately.
