Okinawa sees Japan’s first cherry blossoms of the year — blooming in January and February, weeks ahead of the mainland. The island’s sakura is the kanhizakura (hikanzakura), a vivid, deep-pink bell-shaped cherry quite different from the pale Somei-Yoshino seen elsewhere. Set against subtropical green and historic castle walls, Okinawa’s early blossoms make for a uniquely warm-weather hanami, celebrated with cherry festivals in the north. It’s a wonderful reason to visit the island in winter.

  • Okinawa’s cherries bloom mid-January through February, earliest in Japan.
  • The local kanhizakura (hikanzakura) is a striking deep magenta-pink, bell-shaped and downward-facing — bolder than mainland sakura.
  • Unlike the brief Somei-Yoshino, the bloom unfolds over several weeks (cooler north first).
