Eisa is Okinawa’s electrifying traditional drum-and-dance — rows of performers in vivid costume pounding taiko drums and spinning to the call of the sanshin, all driven by a hypnotic chant and whistle. Rooted in Obon ceremonies to honour ancestral spirits, eisa has grown into a proud symbol of Okinawan identity performed at festivals, cultural parks and street events. What is eisa?
- Groups of drummers and dancers move in formation to taiko drums, sanshin and chant, led by a costumed leader and the chondara (clown-like figure).
- Big odaiko (large drums), shime-daiko and hand drums create a thunderous rhythm.
- Originally danced during Obon to send off ancestral spirits, now also a stage and street art.

- Okinawa Zento Eisa Festival (Okinawa City, around Sep): the biggest — troupes from across the island perform over a weekend, ending with fireworks.
