Long before Shuri unified the islands, Okinawa was dotted with gusuku — the fortified castles of rival Ryukyu lords. Several of their dramatic ruins, prized for their flowing, beautifully engineered curved limestone walls, are inscribed together as UNESCO World Heritage (“Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu”). Zakimi Castle in Yomitan is among the most accessible and best preserved, its ramparts open to walk and offering views to the sea. For history lovers, the gusuku are Okinawa’s most evocative ruins.

What is a gusuku?
Gusuku were the stone castles and sacred precincts of Ryukyu chieftains, mostly built in the 13th–15th centuries. Their hallmark is curving, mortar-free limestone walls that follow the terrain — a distinctive Ryukyu engineering style quite unlike mainland Japanese castles. Many also contain utaki (sacred groves), reflecting their spiritual role.
The main gusuku to visit
- Zakimi Castle (Yomitan): superbly preserved curved walls you can walk along, with sea views; designed by the master builder Gosamaru. Easy and free.
- Nakagusuku Castle (Kitanakagusuku): sweeping ramparts and panoramic island views, also linked to Gosamaru.
- Katsuren Castle (Uruma): hilltop ruins above the sea, once a powerful lord’s stronghold.
- Nakijin Castle (north): large mountain fortress famous for cherry blossoms in late January.

Tips
- Sites are open-air with uneven stone steps — wear sturdy shoes and bring water/sun protection.
- Most are best reached by rental car; some have small museums.
- Early morning or late afternoon light flatters the walls for photos.
