Kouri Island (Kourijima), a small round island off the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa, is one of the island’s most beloved scenic spots, famous above all for the spectacular drive across the Kouri Bridge that connects it to the mainland. Nearly 2 km long and flanked by dazzling turquoise and emerald sea, the bridge is a highlight in itself, and the view from either end is unforgettable. On the island, Kouri Beach beside the bridge offers clear, shallow water perfect for swimming and photos, while on the north coast the famous ‘Heart Rock’ — two rock formations that together frame a heart shape — is a hugely popular photo spot, especially with couples. Small enough to circle in a short drive, Kouri also has cafés, viewpoints and shrimp-wagon eateries serving local garlic shrimp. With some of Okinawa’s clearest, most beautiful seas, Kouri Island makes a perfect, scenic addition to any trip to the northern part of the main island.

Tips
Go on a sunny day for the most dazzling turquoise sea colours over the bridge, and stop at both ends to take in the view. Visit the Heart Rock on the north coast (best light in the morning), try the local garlic shrimp from a food wagon, drive is by far the easiest access, and combine it with the nearby Churaumi Aquarium and Nakijin Castle.
