Yonaha Maehama Beach, on the southwest coast of Miyako Island, is frequently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Japan — and is sometimes called ‘the finest beach in the Orient’. Stretching for around 7 km, it’s a breathtaking ribbon of fine, powder-white sand meeting exceptionally clear, shimmering turquoise water, with gentle shallows that make it superb for swimming. Facing west across the sea toward Kurima Island (linked by a bridge), it’s also one of Okinawa’s premier sunset spots, with glorious evening skies over the water. The beach is well-equipped in season, offering a wide range of marine activities — swimming, snorkelling, banana boats, jet skis, stand-up paddleboarding and more — as well as beachside facilities.
