The Miyako Islands, about 300 km southwest of Okinawa’s main island, are a flat coral paradise ringed by some of Japan’s most beautiful beaches. The water — “Miyako Blue” — is dazzlingly clear, and the islands are famously linked by long, scenic free bridges, including the Irabu Bridge, the longest toll-free bridge in Japan. Beaches & “Miyako Blue”

  • Yonaha Maehama Beach: a 7 km arc of white sand often called one of Japan’s finest beaches.

The bridges

Snorkelling, tips & getting around

  • Snorkelling and diving are excellent; reefs sit close to many beaches.
  • Rent a car — the islands are spread out and public transport is limited.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen; watch for summer jellyfish and currents.
