Cape Zanpa (Zanpa-misaki), on the west coast of Okinawa’s main island in Yomitan Village, is a striking headland where rugged coral limestone cliffs drop about 30 metres to the crashing sea. At its tip stands a tall white lighthouse — one of the few in Okinawa you can climb — offering panoramic views over the East China Sea and the wild, wave-battered coastline from the top. The cape’s raw, windswept scenery, with its jagged rocks, blowholes and open horizon, is a dramatic contrast to Okinawa’s calm beaches, and it’s a renowned spot for watching the sun sink into the ocean. The surrounding park has grassy areas, walking paths, a giant shisa statue, and a nearby beach and facilities, making it a pleasant place to stroll and take in the coastal drama. Easy to reach and free to visit (small fee to climb the lighthouse), Cape Zanpa is a rewarding west-coast stop, especially towards sunset.

Tips
Come towards sunset for the cape’s famous sweeping views of the sun sinking into the East China Sea. Climb the lighthouse (small fee) for panoramic coastal views, take care near the unfenced cliff edges especially in strong wind, wear sun protection, and combine it with nearby Zakimi Castle in Yomitan.
